How to add Bates numbers to a PDF
- Choose the PDF to stamp.
- Edit the prefix, starting number, digit padding, or placement; check the live preview.
- Download the Bates-stamped copy and verify the sequence before production.
Limits & good to know
- The default sequence is ABC-000001, in a monospaced font at the bottom right; prefix, first number, padding, and placement can be changed.
- Bates IDs are visible page text. This does not encrypt the file, establish legal chain of custody, or verify document authenticity.
- The source PDF is preserved; the sequence is written only into the downloaded copy.
- Digitally signed PDFs are refused because any modification would invalidate their signatures.
Frequently asked questions
- Are my files uploaded to a server?
- Your files are processed on your device, not uploaded to our servers. Your file and edits are saved in this browser for recovery, and previous documents remain in Saved drafts when you open another file. Use Saved drafts to resume or delete individual copies, or clear this site’s browser data to remove all copies. Browser storage can be cleared or become unavailable; download important work.
- Can I change the Bates prefix and number?
- Yes. The default is ABC-000001; edit the prefix pattern, first number, and zero padding before downloading.
- Does a Bates stamp make a PDF tamper-proof?
- No. It adds visible identifying text only. It does not encrypt, certify, or prove that a document has not been changed.
- Is this really free, or free "until you hit a limit"?
- Really free. Unlike most "free" PDF sites there is no task-per-day cap, no locked Pro features, no watermark stamped on your file, and no payment step before download. Every tool is the full tool.
